Say ¡Hola! to our new Spanish teacher from sunny Málaga! Her journey into teaching started by chance, when helping friends learn Spanish turned into a full-blown passion for sharing her language and culture. With a Masters under her belt and plenty of classroom experience, she's all about making Spanish lively, practical, and full of real-world flavour. Keep reading to find out how she discovered her calling, what she loves most about Aussie students, and her clever tips for sneaking Spanish into your everyday routine.
Spanish teaching came into my life unexpectedly, at a moment when I was having doubts about my future. It was almost a coincidence: at that time I met some people who were learning Spanish and I became very interested in helping them in the process. What started off as something spontaneous ended up becoming a passion: sharing my language and culture with others.
I started teaching Spanish in my hometown, Málaga, after finishing a Masters in teaching the language. Thanks to my training I interned at a Spanish school, and that experience was the key to realising that I had found my calling.

What I most like about teaching Spanish in Australia is that my students aren't just interested in the language, but also in the culture that surrounds it. A lot of them come to class motivated to travel, discover new traditions, and connect with people from different Spanish-speaking countries. That cultural curiosity makes learning much more dynamic and enriching. It's not just a matter of studying grammar or vocabulary, but opening a window to new experiences and ways of seeing the world.
One of the problems I often find is that many students have very busy lives and can't always dedicate as much time as they'd like to Spanish. Sometimes they come to class highly motivated but then have trouble maintaining that level between work, study, and personal responsibiliities. That's a challenge, because learning a language requires frequent practice. For this reason, I try to offer students strategies and practucal activities that are adapted to their everyday lives, so that they can progress even without much free time available.

To get the most out of classes, it's crucial for students to spend time studying at home as well. Doing homework and revising classwork helps strengthen content knowledge and progress with greater certainty. What's more, these days there are lots of resources that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine: podcasts, videos, short texts, or even apps for practicing vocabulary. There's no need to spend hours and hours studying – just find little moments to maintain contact with Spanish every day.
In my classes I mix different techniques and strategies, because I believe that every student learns in a different way. However, I mostly use the communicative approach, since I understand languages to be best learned when they're used in real-life sitautions. I like students to practice activities that allow them to express themsleves, interact and understand the lanuage in authentic contexts from the very first day. At the same time, I complement this approach with visual resources, games, and cultural materials that make learning more dynamic.
