Meet Daniela, one of El Patio's incredible teachers from Colombia! With a love of language, writing, reading and even grammar (very importantly) Daniela's classes reflect her love of teaching, sharing cultures and the power of learning a language in bringing people from all walks of life together. Daniela understands the importance of communication and practice when learning a language and she implements this in her classes with her fun, interesting and dynamic teaching style. As a student of languages herself, she has lots of useful study tips to help you along the way and even videos that she makes! Daniela's love of teaching began at an early age. Now that love has brought her all the way across the world to El Patio and we are so happy and lucky to have her!

Why did you study to become a Spanish teacher?

When I was in high school, like everyone else, I didn't know what I wanted to study or do with my life after graduation, I just knew that I liked literature and writing stories. Around that time, I had to participate in a mentorship programme with elementary school students to complete community service hours. What started out as an obligation led me to realise that I really enjoyed teaching and I was good at it! Well, as well as a teenager can. Since I loved my Spanish class, writing, learning grammar (thrilling, I know) and reading, I decided to become a Spanish teacher. 

I was also inspired by my dad, who is an amazing natural science teacher in Colombia.

¿Por qué estudiaste para ser profesor de español?

Cuando estaba en secundaria, como todos, no sabía qué quería estudiar o hacer con mi vida después de graduarme, solo sabía que me gustaba la literatura y escribir cuentos. Por ese tiempo, tuve que participar de un programa de mentoría con estudiantes de primaria para completar horas de servicio comunitario. Lo que inició como una obligación me llevó a darme cuenta de que disfrutaba mucho enseñar ¡y lo hacía bien! Bueno, tan bien como una adolescente puede. Como me encantaba mi clase de español, escribir, aprender gramática (thrilling, I know) y leer, decidí volverme profesora de español. 

También fui inspirada por mi papá, que es un muy buen profesor de ciencias naturales en Colombia.

When did you start teaching Spanish and where?

I started teaching Spanish as a second language in 2021 in Bogotá, Colombia. I worked in an academy for three years, teaching and meeting people from all over the world who travelled to Bogotá for a thousand different reasons (tourism, work, love, family, food and some even went because they preferred Colombian dentists haha).  

In this experience I definitely learned a lot about the Spanish language and culture of my country, as well as other Spanish-speaking countries. In the end, this learning and meeting so many people from abroad inspired me to leave Colombia. And here I am!

¿Cuándo empezaste a enseñar español y dónde?

Empecé a enseñar español como segunda lengua en 2021 en Bogotá, Colombia. Trabajé en una academia por tres años, enseñando y conociendo a personas de todo el mundo que viajaban a Bogotá por mil razones diferentes (turismo, trabajo, amor, familia, comida e incluso algunos iban porque preferían los dentistas colombianos, jaja). 

En esta experiencia definitivamente aprendí muchísimo del español como lengua y la cultura de mi país, así como de otros países de habla hispana. Al final, estos aprendizajes y conocer tantas personas del extranjero me inspiraron a salir de Colombia. ¡Y aquí estoy!

What aspect do you enjoy most about teaching Spanish in Australia?

Teaching Spanish is never just about teaching grammar rules, vocabulary and phrases, but about sharing a part of your identity and culture. People in Melbourne are very open-minded, they are interested to know about my country, customs, food, music and so on. I haven’t had a single boring class!

As this is my first time in Australia, I have the same interests and so, especially at a more advanced level, rather than a traditional class, we can have a conversation motivated by curiosity. 

¿Qué aspecto te gusta de la enseñanza del español en Australia?

Enseñar español nunca es solo enseñar reglas gramaticales, vocabulario y frases, sino compartir una parte de tu identidad y cultura. Las personas en Melbourne tienen una mentalidad muy abierta, están interesados por saber de mi país, costumbres, comida, música y demás. ¡No he tenido una sola clase aburrida!

Como es mi primera vez en Australia, tengo los mismos intereses y por eso, especialmente en niveles un poco más avanzados, más que una clase tradicional, podemos tener una conversación motivada por la curiosidad. 

What do you find most difficult about teaching Spanish in Australia?

For me, the most difficult thing is that even though we live in a city where there a lot of Spanish speakers, my students don't have many real life environments to practise there Spanish in as everyone predominantly speaks English. Therefore, I always encourage them to find alternatives (such as conversation clubs, language exchange groups or apps) where they can practice their oral skills with other Spanish speakers or learners. In other words, as we say in Spanish: You gotta set your tongue free!

¿Y qué es lo que te resulta más difícil de la enseñanza del español en Australia?

Para mí, lo más difícil es el hecho de que mis estudiantes no tienen tantos espacios para practicar en entornos reales porque viven en una ciudad en donde, aunque vivimos muchos hispanohablantes, predominantemente hablamos en inglés. Por eso, siempre los motivo a encontrar alternativas (como clubes de conversación, grupos de intercambio de lenguas o aplicaciones) en donde puedan practicar sus habilidades orales con otros hispanohablantes o aprendientes. Mejor dicho, como decimos en español: ¡Hay que soltar la lengua!

Can you advise students on how to better prepare for classes?

In general, and also being a student right now, I think that preparing before class, being attentive during class and revising after class are key. Before class, make time to do your homework or prepare for the class topic. During class, avoid distractions, participate, ask questions and have fun. After class, take 15 minutes to review the topics and check your understanding. Repetition is good for your memory and helps you build a study habit.

¿Puedes aconsejar al estudiantado cómo se pueden preparar mejor para las clases?

En general, y siendo también ahora mismo una estudiante, pienso que prepararse antes de la clase, estar atento durante la clase y revisar después de la clase son clave. Antes de la clase, haz tiempo para hacer tu tarea o prepararte para el tema de la clase. Durante la clase, evita las distracciones, participa, haz preguntas y diviértete. Después de la clase, toma 15 minutos para revisar los temas y verificar que entendiste. La repetición es buena para tu memoria y te ayuda a crear un hábito de estudio.

What do you think is the best memorization method?

I think this is a totally subjective question, because everyone learns differently, but from my experience writing down my new vocabulary with meaningful examples works very well. When I want to learn new words I always write them down (because I need a mental image of the words) in a notebook. I never write them down in isolation however, but in an example that I can remember or that is meaningful to me.

For example, it is more meaningful and useful to write down and memorise: “Yo voy a mi casa después del trabajo”, because it is true for me and easier to remember than writing down “casa”, “trabajo” and “después” as isolated words. Remember that context in Spanish is very important.

¿Cuál te parece el mejor método de memorización?

Creo que esta es una pregunta totalmente subjetiva, porque cada persona aprende diferente, pero desde mi experiencia, anotar mi nuevo vocabulario con ejemplos significativos funciona bien. Cuando quiero aprender palabras nuevas siempre las escribo (porque necesito una imagen mental de las palabras) en un cuaderno, pero nunca las escribo aisladas, sino en un ejemplo que pueda recordar o que sea significativo para mí.

Por ejemplo, es más significativo y útil anotar y memorizar: “Yo voy a mi casa después del trabajo”, porque es verdad para mí y es más fácil de recordar que anotar “casa”, “trabajo” y “después” como palabras aisladas. Recuerda que el contexto en español es muy importante.

What methods do you use most frequently in your Spanish classes?

There are many different teaching methods and methodologies. Honestly, I like to keep it simple and create classes that are functional, interesting and dynamic. 

For me, grammar and communication are two very important elements of learning Spanish, because grammar gives a student the tools to be an independent speaker and, as practice makes perfect, active communication in the classroom allows you to interact with the language. I think the combination of the two is usually a good way to go. Although sometimes many people think that grammar is too difficult or complicated, I like to bring it in different ways into the classroom so that it is accessible to everyone.

¿Qué métodos utilizas más frecuentemente en las clases de español?

Hay muchos nombres de métodos y metodologías de enseñanza. Honestamente, prefiero mantenerlo simple. A mí me gusta crear clases que sean funcionales, interesantes y dinámicas. 

Para mí, la gramática y la comunicación son dos elementos muy importantes del aprendizaje del español, porque la gramática le da a un estudiante las herramientas para ser un hablante independiente y, como la práctica hace al maestro, la comunicación activa en la clase le permite interactuar con la lengua. Creo que la combinación de ambas es normalmente un buen camino a seguir. Aunque a veces muchas personas piensan que la gramática es muy difícil o complicada, me gusta llevarla de diferentes formas a la clase para que sea accesible para todos.

Is there a common question from students about acquiring Spanish? And your response?

How long do you think I need before I can speak fluently? This is the most common question I get as a teacher. I hate not having an answer, because there isn't one - it's different for everyone! Don't worry about time, find your own rhythm and the rest will come by itself.

Learning a language is not an act of results, but of processes. The most interesting thing is that once you start, you are never completely finished.

¿Hay alguna pregunta común de los estudiantes sobre la adquisición del español? ¿Y tu respuesta?

¿Cuánto tiempo crees que necesite para hablar fluidamente? Es la pregunta más común que recibo como profesora. Odio no tener una respuesta, porque no hay una. ¡Es diferente para todos! No te preocupes por el tiempo. Encuentra tu ritmo propio y el resto vendrá por añadidura.

Aprender un idioma no es un acto de resultados, sino de procesos. Lo más interesante es que una vez empiezas, nunca terminas totalmente.
