In Patagonia, a piece of heaven on Earth
I have always been keen on languages. I really enjoyed language and literature classes. For me, every language is a door to a different world and playing in it thrills me. Over time, I realized that the best thing I could do was share this experience with people, so I decided to become a Spanish teacher.
As soon as I graduated, I started teaching at a secondary school in Argentina. That provided me with great practice in the classroom. Meanwhile, I kept doing some work at university as a member of a research team in Spanish as a foreign language. Within this project, an opportunity for volunteer work popped up in 2018. It consisted of teaching Spanish to migrants in my city. It was pretty challenging due to the community’s circumstances. This enhanced my passion and I began looking at options to live the experience of teaching Spanish abroad.
Australia seemed to be the best country to achieve this goal, so I made plans for my Visa application and flew to Melbourne in May 2022. Two weeks after, I got an interview at El Patio and since then I have been teaching at this lovely school. I am celebrating the anniversary this month.
Happy to visit this iconic place in Sydney
It is amazing how motivated the students are here. That is crucial in the learning process and I make the most of it. Having a Latin partner, an upcoming trip, being a grammar lover, or just for fun, every reason behind helps to create a friendly environment to encourage participation. In addition, I love sharing cultural aspects from the Spanish-speaking world, particularly from Argentina.
In Australia, I found two frequent kinds of students, the ones who learn a second language for the first time and those who already speak more than one or two languages. I try to balance the rhythm and give explanations suitable for both groups.

Completing the exercises from homework always helps keep you on track. Finding your personal way to learn is also important. Making lists and studying them, listening to podcasts, and playing grammar games are ideas worth trying.

That depends on what type of student you are. However, there are some methods more suitable for each occasion like using mimics and gestures for certain vocabulary or memorizing a sentence as an example of a grammar structure to use as a model. Needless to say, the classic repetition of conjugations is still effective. What can also be useful is creating a story involving the irregular verbs to remember them easily.
I like to set guided comic situations (roleplays, drawings, compositions) which attract attention and make students actively take part in the tasks. If the process is enjoyable, it becomes a meaningful experience. It is also a great opportunity to observe and learn from other students.
They often ask me about how to improve their fluency. My first piece of advice is not to be afraid of making mistakes. Secondly, be patient, go step by step, and try to express yourself with the resources that you have at the moment. With practice, you will be able your express your ideas more fluently and with more complexity.
A menudo me preguntan cómo ganar fluidez.

This is an activity that I prepared for a B1-level class. The aim is to recognize the use of the different past tenses. After that, there is a moment to interview a classmate and share personal experiences.
