Learn Imperfecto and Indefinido using Poetry (A2/B1)

To help her students intuitively differentiate the Preterito Indefinido and Preterito Imperfecto tenses, Raquel designed a poetry exercise. The idea here was to use rhythm and rhyme to facilitate memorisation. Poetic form helped expand vocabulary while the task cemented the irregular conjugations of the two most confusing tenses. What was the result? Poems that are hilarious, abstract, entertaining yet still very grammatically useful!

Elke and Fiona

Cuando yo estudiaba los verbos con 'aba'
Tú te vestiste frente al espejo triste
Y cantaste una canción de jamón
en una pensión de Aragón.

Cuando yo aprendía la nueva palabrería,
Tú te fuiste a la churrería y a la taquería
¡ y yo comía todo el día
en la cocina fría de María!

Era el último día de la cocina de María,
porque mi corazón ardía por Maria.

Justine and Angela

Qué azul era el cielo
Pero profundo era mi sueño
Qué dulce fue tu beso
Pero pesado mi corazón de hueso

Estoy feliz cuando tú estás sonriendo
Estoy triste cuando tú estás mintiendo

Ahora todo lo que quiero
Es un buen paseo con mi perro
Pero mejor me quedo con mi gato
Para ver la televisión un rato.

Bridget and Ben

Cuando dijo me duelen las orejas
Cuando te miré, vi tus cejas
Cuando caminaste, vi un elefante
Si nos sentamos juntos, yo voy delante
Cuando te escuché por primera vez
Se me puso la cara de pez
Pero cuando te besé en la boca
Supe que estaba loca

Sally and Karen

Tuve un sueño con la policía
Cuando yo viajaba en el tranvía

Yo le ofrecí un delicioso queso y
Entonces me dio un dulce beso

Después me levanté con terror
Pienso que necesito un doctor

Le dije que me sentía extraña
Porque bebía demasiadas cañas
