Iconic Festivals of Latin America!

New Year's may have come and gone, but the fiesta doesn't stop! Latin America is brimming with festivals throughout the year, offering incredible music, delicious food, and fascinating cultural insights. Read on to find out about five iconic festivals of Latin America!

International Tango Festival, Argentina (August)

This event, drawing a global crowd, celebrates Argentina’s most iconic cultural offering - the tango! Free workshops and classes abound, as well as countless associated fiestas and the impressive Mundial de Tango: the world’s premier international Tango competition!

Day of the Dead, Mexico (31 October-2 November)

Día de los Muertos, as it is known in Mexico, sees families decorate the graves of loved ones and celebrate their lives with food, parties, and other activities. Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca is particularly renowned for its calendas, or costume parades, which are well known for being colourful and energetic.

Flower Fair, Colombia (1-10 August)

Taking place in the city of Medellín, Colombia’s Flower Fair celebrates the painstaking and breathtaking work of silleteros - the farmers who cultivate and then create beautiful displays and installations made from flowers! Other highlights include an orchestral showcase, horse parades, as well as plenty of dancing.

Inti Raymi, Peru (24 June)

This festival centres around a celebration of the Winter Solstice and the Inca sun god Inti. The festival involves a huge traditional ceremony that runs throughout Cusco and surrounding Inca ruins, followed by the usual partying and feasting! Impressive Inca clothing and items, as well as traditional rituals, characterise this Indigenous cultural festival in Peru.

SPECIAL MENTION - Carnival, Brazil (normally February)

A discussion of Latin American festivals would not be complete without the famous Carnival, held throughout Brazil in the early months of the year! Even though Brazilians don’t speak Spanish, a visit to the country during Carnival is well worth the effort! Parades, parties, and extravagant costumes characterise Carnival - and it's easy to see why this mega-fiesta lasts a whole week!
