In this playlist, Ana takes us into the world of Andalusian Copla - a type of traditional song that was born in the early 1920s. The lyrics tell stories of relationships torn apart, impossible desires, heartbreak, jealousy and loss.
Copla is believed to be the heir of old Castilian ‘Romance’ – a Spanish lyrical poetry composition from the 14th Century.
In the 40s, Copla experienced a rebirth, which lasted until the 60s when the style was overshadowed by an explosion in popularity of Western pop music. In the 80s, Copla was reinvented through new versions of the classics being performed.
Today, the genre is very much alive. There are many singers who dedicate themselves exclusively to Copla, and other artists who pay hommage to the style – the selection presented here includes both. There are specialists of Copla such as Carlos Cano; rock singers like the Argentine Andrés Calamaro; flamenco performers such as Niña Pastori or Miguel Poveda; eclectic artists such as Martirio, Buika, Malú and Vinila von Bismark; and last but not least, flamenco pop artists like Rosario Flores. We hope you like it.
