Read the first of our stories in Spanish - graded for specific levels. This one is for beginners, or A1 in progress (A1 complete is when you've done Upper Elementary 3). It not only contains a glossary of nouns, and a list of conjugated verbs, but - wait for it - lesson on SER & ESTAR - hurrah!
Es una casa típica australiana, tiene un porche, dos dormitorios, una cocina estilo años sesenta, un salón-comedor y un cuarto de baño separado del retrete.
La casa tiene unos cien años, más o menos, y es de estilo eduardiano. Es una casa larga y estrecha, como un vagón de tren. En la entrada, a la izquierda, hay un dormitorio, después, también a la izquierda, está el segundo dormitorio y al final del pasillo está el pequeño salón-comedor. Para llegar a la cocina tenemos que ir hasta el fondo del corredor y cruzar la habitación que usamos para ver la televisión y comer. En la parte trasera de la casa, justo tras la cocina, está el lavabo, la lavandería y el retrete. Detrás del edificio hay jardín con un pequeño huerto donde plantamos algunas verduras: tomates, lechuga, judías verdes, acelgas, etc; y hierbas: perejil, albahaca, hierbabuena, tomillo…. También hay un viejo tendedero giratorio para la colada.
La casa tiene un suelo de tablas de madera vieja. Es un suelo ruidoso porque, cuando caminas sobre él, cruje con cada pisada. Hoy entro a casa y voy directamente a la cocina a preparar un café, no encuentro el café y busco en todos los armarios y cajones. Finalmente miro en el último cajón al lado del lavavajillas, la madera del suelo cede y se levanta. Con cuidado miro, un poco asustada, debajo del listón de madera ahora ya todo desprendido y, para mi sorpresa, veo una vieja caja de latón para el tabaco. Saco la caja, la abro y me encuentro con que contiene siete monedas de oro. Estas monedas son muy peculiares porque no tienen denominación ni valor escrito en ellas, excepto ¨Sydney Mint, Australia, One Sovereign".

SER is a more definite, more serious verb, it defines a sort of permanent state, eg, if you consider being a student a permanent occupation.

ESTAR is a more impermanent state of mind, it changes position in time and space and tries to locate you wherever you are. And, yes, to be dead in Spanish is impermanent - está muerto.
